Steem the Atari St and Falcon émulator

  • Steem the referal émulator to run Atari St and Falcon games!
Steem runs all games and softwares with no worries as long as the good Tos is installed for the good game or software. therefore, no compatibility problems you just have to install it by clicking several easy icons. otherwise if you are curious you will find below other emulators that can also run the Atari St and Falcon games too.
Just for knowledge Steem exists now with a language file in French so just install it while you install the emulator, it's very easy, you just have to drop the file into the Steem program folder. After that, numerous aids are available on different websites and offers good howto articles. at worst you can ask for help on the forums we will answer with pleasure. Have fun with Steem...

the Tos: Tramiel opérating system

  • What is the Tos:
The word Tos is an acronym for Tramiel Operating System. in fact the operating system of the St, a bit like windows for PC or finder for macs.
So you will need an image (copy) of this TOS (that you can download below) to launch steem.
  • Why many Tos:
Following the year during which was déveloped a game or a software, this soft will be useless if the tools to use are not from the same year or not updated to make it launchable, because it has been déveloped to run on the latest available machines.

So if a game or a software does not work it is probably that the good Tos is not installed on your émulator. it can also be a small tip overlapping the dates of realease of the soft, where the software to adapt the Tos! Tos eg 88 for a game released in 1988 will be 1.02 so you avoid losing too much time trying to make it work with 1.00 ^__^

St saw between 1974 and 1990 many évolutions that have dramatically changed him, and so it had to évolve its opérating system the same way. So to summarize: each new Atari St until the Falcon is a new Tos ...

install help and how to

  • Help to install Steem:
First download Steem using the above link as well as Tos whose various versions can be found on the lower left this page, after the explanation of what those Tos are.

Then create a folder named Steem or Atari or any other name you want inside. now create an another folder named Tos, you will find your Tos easier after, and create one another another another folder more, called software, and where you will be able to store your games and software for Atari St.

Now extract the downloaded file Steem in the first folder, then your Tos files in the Tos folder.

Go to the folder named Steem then double click the icon, where the logo that turns you can see above is, it is the Steem logo. Now Steem thanks you for installation and offers to put a shortcut in your start menu to open it when you want. do so.

Steem then ask you a picture of a Tos. then click ok and in the folder that is offered you will find the file Tos that you created earlier. choose it. if you have decompressed the downloaded Tos in this folder a Tos file with a version number should appear, choose one and choose the open button.

Steem then asks you if you ever had Atari ST games or softwares on your hard drive and offers you to specify the directory to find them more easily, so click ok and choose the folder you called software, it will be more usefull in the future.

Finally Steem offers emulation of Atari ST hard drives, up to 10. click ok if you need one then choose a folder that will serve as a virtual hard drive to your emulator and continue as long as you want to install virtual disks or choose no. Steem then thanks you again and will start automatically for your first use.

If you need you will find help further down on this page for using Steem once installed.

how to use Steem

  • List of the questions:

  • How to run the first Atari St software?
You have two solutions:

1. The first is to right click on a file from one of your games or software for Atari ST, select the option "open with" then choose steem in your program list after you have checked "Select the program in a list".

2. The second option is to click on the icon circled in red on the image below and choose the folder where you store your games. then you can browse it and double click on the game you want to play in that new window. you can browse all your hard drive down using the parent directory which is always the first on the left with a red arrow. games once found double click the one that interested you to launch it.

- Note that you must decompress rar files if you use the second solution!

  • My game does not works but I was told it works
Your currently installed Tos may not be good for the game there. to test your game with another Tos click on the icon circled in red on the image below and then click "Tos" on the new window left menu.

A list of tos in your folder will appear. you can either choose another Tos for testing if you have one, either click on the button "add" and find another Tos on your computer hard drive. you will then click on "Perform a cold reset now" when you will have find a new Tos to test it.

Note that all Tos are downloadable on this page
